Psychology II Topics

Welcome to Psychology II,

The basis for this curriculum is the VHS Honors Psychology course that I facilitate online.  We will be mirroring the following topics at roughly two week intervals.  Psychology II represents the second half of that curriculum.

Motivation and Emotion
In this unit we'll be looking at what motivates us and what causes us to have the emotions that we have. One of the newest resources that we will watch is the movie Inside Out which recently left the movie theaters.  We will have an On the Couch scenario where you apply the reading to a virtual patient.

Human Development Part I: Infancy and Childhood
In this unit we will study on human development, focusing on childhood. Developmental psychology is a large field, with many options for further study. We will begin to work on our World's Best Babysitter project and this will take several weeks to complete.

Human Development Part II: Adolescent and Adult
Then we move to the next two stages by focusing on development during adolescence and adulthood. We will continue working on the world's best babysitter project.

Human Development Part III: Elderly and Death
The final component of these related units will focus on the aging population in the United States and what happens to the body and mind during our golden years.  We will discuss Alzheimer's and other degenerative diseases and take a look at what modern psychology feels is happening during our final moments before death.

Social Psychology
This unit will examine the field of social psychology - how individuals interact within society. We will also discuss the babysitter project and examine violence on television.  Additionally, we will look at the research around how violent video games impact young people.  This week has another On the Couch Scenario where you apply the reading to a patient.

Psychological Disorders
What is normal? All of us suffer from some bouts of anxiety from time to time. However, when experienced over a long period of time, anxiety can be considered a psychological disorder.  We'll take a look at psychological disorders and the causes associated with them. You'll also complete another On the Couch patient evaluation, and post and discuss your findings on aggression and the media.

Psychological Therapies
In this unit we'll be looking at treatments for psychological disorders. You'll have a final On the Couch patient evaluation and a chance to hear about everyone else's projects.
